Below are the courses that have more 'Engineering' in them. Although most of our courses involve take-home equipment, the following ones generally have a more significant focus on building / engineering skills. For a full list of courses see the 'Courses' menu above.
Looking for an exciting engineering camp with an emphasis on design and practical skills? Our 3D printing course teaches you how to build, modify and repair your own 3D printer.
After building the printer, learn 3D design to make your own creations. Of course, you'll take home everything including your 3D printer.
We run this course at several levels. Everyone firsts builds their printers. Then the younger campers start with an intuitive drag-and-drop 3D modelling environment, whilst older campers use professional-level 3D CAD software (Fusion 360).
We're using a brand new printer in 2024 which has a self-levelling bed making printing even easier!
If you've already done our 3D Printing 1 course, but are mad keen on design and 3D printers, you might like to try a harder version of the course and get your hands on our new 3D printer at the same time.
Campers who have previously done the junior version of the course using Tinkercad will upgrade their skills by learning Fusion 360, as used by professional engineers.
If you already have done the 'Fusion 360' version of the course, we've got an even more advanced version that will teach real product design skills, including adding features like ribs, bosses, snap catches, joints and assemblies. Along the way you'll design a water bottle, a replaceable-bit screwdriver (complete with bits that we provide), use flexible filament and much more.
This course is strictly for campers who have done 3D Printing 1. When booking this version of '3D Printing' you should select the 'Level 2' option on checkout.
You'll construct a miniature RC car & customised control system by hacking into an electronic steering wheel and pedal system. Together with an FPV camera and headset, you'll have the ultimate racing experience.
This is no simulator. You'll feel like you're in the cockpit of a real race car – albeit a miniature one - so you'll have to hone your driving skills to avoid crashing your vehicle.
This is also no toy. With a computerised transmitter (a motion-controlled steering wheel) and a computerised receiver, you can customise every aspect of the driving experience from menus to steering, speed, and custom moves.
Would you like to build your own computer? In this course, you'll be using the latest 'Raspberry Pi 5' to build an advanced Linux computer that you can take home. Use it to do your schoolwork, browse the web, play music, and much more. You'll also attach a high-resolution camera, microphone and speakers, to turn your machine into your own 'Alexa' (or 'Siri'!), learning about AI and neural networks.
You'll also discover how to use the Linux command line, code in Python, and interface colour-changing 'Neopixel' strips to add a bit of bling! You'll even create an automated language translator, and build a web server. Finally, you'll create your own retro game station and build an advanced LLM system of your own (like ChatGPT) that you can ask questions. This course is the perfect 'all-rounder' option for those that would like a bit of programming, a bit of creating and a lot of fun projects!
When you take your computer home, you can either buy an inexpensive keyboard, screen and mouse (around £50-£100) to turn it into a general purpose computer, or use it 'headless' as a security system, music player, or 'Alexa'. You'll also be able to control it from another computer using a 'remote desktop' setup.
Do you want the adrenaline rush of a high-speed racing experience without even leaving your chair? Come to our drone racing summer camp and learn how to become a talented drone pilot, and to experience the exhilarating sport of drone racing!
You'll learn about drone physics, hone your skills on a flight simulator, learn how to maintain your drone, and even build your own light-up LED hoop.
As with all Tech Camp courses, take home all of your equipment at the end including the racing drone, video headset, controller and racing hoop.
If you've already done our Drone Racing 1 course, this will take your skills to the next level. Take charge of a high-speed drone that has enough lift to fly with a recording camera (must be purchased separately) to enter the world of drone cinematography.
As with our introductory course, you'll learn about drone physics, hone your skills even more on a flight simulator, learn how to maintain your drone, and build our V2.0 LED hoop. However this time, you'll build your drone from the ground-up and learn how to connect brushless motors, cameras and a flight controller. You'll even mod your drone with a custom LED light display.
You'll also study for and take the official CAA test at camp and leave with a flyer ID to allow you to fly outside when you get home.
This course is strictly for those who have done Drone Racing 1, as you'll need your headset, and (most importantly) FPV drone flying skills. When booking this version of 'Drone Racing' you should select the 'Level 2' option on checkout.
Do you like technology and creating things? What if you could create advanced electronic devices by just connecting components and dragging and dropping? You'll be given two sophisticated WiFi 'embedded computers' and a set of over 25 advanced modules. These include motors, servos, an OLED screen, atmospheric sensors, security keypads and fobs, a laser rangefinder, ultrasonic sensor, heart-rate sensor and even a satellite navigation module - all yours to take home with you.
Want to create a battling robot? How about an electronic lock box that could only be opened when taken to a specific location on the planet? Perhaps a pulse oximeter, a remote plant monitoring system, or a RFID card security system? You'll learn how to build all of those and best of all you'll have the knowledge and equipment to keep creating when you get home.
Your computer modules can be programmed using a simple drag-and-drop environment or Python, so this course is suitable for both beginners and advanced Tech Creators!
