Parents' Guide to Non-Residential Tech Camps

About the Camp

Tech Camp was established in 2008 as an alternative to the ‘Sports camp’ or ‘Multi-activity camp’ model, and has quickly become a big annual event, attracting hundreds of children over the summer from around the UK (and indeed from several countries overseas). It is quite different from any other camp – the activities that the children undertake are done nowhere else; many are designed specifically for Tech Camp. The camp is designed to captivate the interest of every child; we have many who are ‘tech enthusiasts’, but we also have many who wouldn’t cite technology as the love of their life – they come purely because of the exciting activities that we offer.

The London version of this camp is run along similar lines to our Winchester camps, but at a day-only (non-residential) venue.  The main camps runs from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

Location

These events are for ages 9-17, and are held at five different venues.

Please note that parking is limited at some venues (particularly at Chelsea Academy where there is no venue car park, although adjacent meter parking is available but bring some coins to feed in!)

About the Staff

All staff at Tech Camp are chosen because of their ability to work with children and their passion for science and technology. Of course all staff go through a stringent checking process including enhanced DBS checks, but in addition, almost all of the staff have worked with us before or were well-known to us before starting the camps. The courses are usually run by an ‘academic’ – someone who works professionally in a technology-related field, or who is a teacher or university student studying engineering or IT. A couple of key staff with great experience working with children (often in boarding schools or as parents themselves) take the lead in managing the camp in general and supervising the children in break times. Important Dates

Note that the non-residential camps run on Mondays-Fridays but the actual dates vary between venues.  Please check the details on the relevant Tech Camp web page.

The main course options for these weeks generally involve full weeks but we also offer some single-day and two-day courses.

Registration

When you arrive with day campers on the first day you will need to follow the signs and register your child.  Campers should arrive at 9:30am.  When you arrive at the Academy the your venue the Tech Camp manager will be there to meet you in reception.  We'll ask you to sign a consent form on the first day - those who are not able to be present on the first day in person with their child will need to print, fill-in, sign and return this consent form to us with their child.  The consent form is available here.  Once completed, you are welcome to scan and email the form back to us instead.

A Typical Day

9:30am(single day courses) Campers arrive and sign-in (Reception will be staffed from 9:15am - 9:45am.  If the camper is likely to be late please send us a text using the mobile phone number listed below (under 'Communication') for the Tech Camp manager.  Please do not call the venue or the general Tech Camp number.
9:30am-12:30pm Morning session (there will be a snack break in the middle)
12:30pm-1:30pm

Lunch (campers bring their own food)

1:30pm-4/4:30pm Afternoon session (there will be a snack break in the middle)
4:30pm Campers sign-out and depart.  Courses finish at 4:30pm. (Reception will be staffed until 4:45pm.  In the case of an emergency that makes you late please send us a text using the mobile phone number listed below (under 'Communication') for the Tech Camp manager.  Please do not call the college or the general Tech Camp number.

The Courses

Each day the campers participate in one course where they work on various projects that are completed throughout the week.

We sometimes get asked if a child can miss a particular day during the camp (for week-long courses). This is not ideal as most courses are designed to run over the full week. Having said that, if it is unavoidable we usually try our hardest to make this work, but we can’t offer a reduction in the fees in this case and it is possible that the child may not advance as far as possible in their courses. Do let us know if there are any unavoidable clashes on a particular day and we will try to give you a heads-up on the likely consequences for a particular camp.

Food

Food and snacks are not provided at our day venues.  Campers will need to bring a packed lunch.

Pocket Money

Pocket money is not required (or useful) for this event.

Group Requests

On sign-up it is possible to request being in the same group as a friend.  We are usually able to accommodate these requests unless campers are widely separated by age or experience.

Health Issues

We have a qualified first-aider on site at all camps to make sure everyone is happy and healthy. Beyond minor cuts and bruises, we will let you know immediately if there are any problems.

Communication

So if your children are at Tech Camp, how do we ensure that the communication channels are open? We have established multiple facilities to allow easy communication to take place:

  • If your child has a phone with them, you can obviously reach them using this.
  • You can email us at any time and we will follow up issues ASAP.  Make sure you select the email link on our website that goes to the relevant Tech Camp manager.
  • In an emergency you can call our staff mobile number on 075 9987 4967  – please note that during camps it is extremely busy and we would request that you email us if it is not an emergency and we will endeavour to get back to you ASAP.

We realise that phones are an increasingly important part of students' life as they get older. We allow the campers to keep phones with them but of course they are their responsibility.

What can I bring?

Children are welcome to bring iPods, game consoles, books, etc.  We have a supervised lunch break of around an hour so if you think you'll get bored, you're welcome to bring your own entertainment!  Of course the children must not bring anything dangerous to the camp such as knives and matches.  If unsure, please ask!

What will happen next?

We will keep you up to date if any information changes related to the camps. Around a month before the camp we request final payment.  If a parent/guardian is not going to be present for registration, we request that you print (and sign) a consent form, and send your child to camp with this.
